How do you get invited to an Election Night party with elected officials and candidates?
The first campaign I really threw myself into was Jenny Lam’s run for San Francisco School Board back in 2019. I canvassed, fundraised, wrote policy briefs, and managed the endorsement process. Her Election Night party was at a sleek spot on Market Street- reporters milled around, city officials made appearances, the mayor was there. Jenny’s family, campaign staff, consultants, and volunteers gathered to celebrate, and when she gave her victory speech, the room erupted. Election Night parties are the culmination of months and months of work, a reminder that you’re part of something bigger, that you made a difference in your city.💪
Whether your candidate wins or loses, the Election Night party is a celebration of something bigger than the outcome: it’s a celebration of your values. If your candidate wins, those values are headed straight into city hall- carried by someone with a new platform and real power. That’s gratifying. But even if your candidate doesn’t win, the campaign wasn’t for nothing. You helped bring those values into the conversation. You showed that they have a constituency- that people care about that candidate’s message. The number of votes might not be enough for victory, but they are enough to send a signal that there’s a real constituency for this set of values. Enough to shape the thinking of whoever does take office. Election night is a moment to celebrate that impact, together.
And maybe the back of your head will be in the news coverage the next day.

You usually have to be in with the campaign to get an invite to an Election Night party…
… so Abundance New York is making sure that folks who volunteer for aligned candidates get to attend an Election Night party! 🥳
Sign up here for a volunteer shift on Saturday, 6/21; Sunday, 6/22; or Election Day, Tuesday, 6/24.
Work hard for the best candidates—then celebrate with Abundance community members!
Not to mention, it’s worth 30 Bootcamp points to volunteer on a campaign.
Shoutouts to the most recent 70-Point all-stars 🎉
Huge shoutout to the most recent Bootcampers to hit 70 points- our official civic powerhouses. Getting to 70 means you’ve gone beyond just voting: you’ve researched, taken action, shared what you’ve learned, and brought others along with you. This kind of consistent engagement is exactly what strengthens our democracy and builds momentum around local races that often get overlooked. Whether you hosted an event, made a voter guide, or just kept showing up, your work matters- and it’s making a difference. Welcome to the 70+ club!
👏Rafat Rahman is showing up on every front. He reminded friends to vote, volunteered on a mayoral campaign, attended the Sunrise Movement’s voter drive, and made time for the NYC Civic Fair. That’s full-spectrum civic engagement.
👏Liz Nellis dove into researching the Public Advocate race to form an opinion on who to vote for. And she started a Substack, Give/Get NYC, where she gave a shoutout to NYC Politics 101!
👏Brittany Nickell is building her voter muscle in a big way: she’s registered, has a voting plan, knows her rankings for mayor, and already has picks for Comptroller and Public Advocate. Next up: digging into City Council and Borough President races, and staying informed through local newsletters.
That’s it for today. I’ll be back soon with more ways to get points, learn about local issues, build community, and influence politics. 💪In the meantime, some additional resources:
